The Dhaka franchise won the first two BPL titles ever played. Then it won a third. Then it spent the next decade changing its name roughly as often as a Dhaka bus changes its route board, and finishing nowhere near the top.
So what are the Dhaka Capitals? They are the Bangladesh Premier League’s Dhaka-based franchise, owned by Champions Sports Ltd in partnership with film star Shakib Khan and Remark HB Limited, captained in BPL 2026 by wicketkeeper Mohammad Mithun and coached by Toby Radford. They have three BPL titles, more than any club except Comilla Victorians, but they finished fifth of six in BPL 2026 and have now missed the playoffs for several seasons running.

How Many Players Are in the Dhaka Capitals Squad?
Dhaka Capitals named 22 players for BPL 2026, split into 14 Bangladeshi cricketers and 8 overseas signings. That gave them one of the more experienced squads in the tournament on paper.
The problem was never the names. Alex Hales, Imad Wasim, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Dasun Shanaka would walk into most T20 sides in the region, and Taskin Ahmed is one of Bangladesh’s best fast bowlers.
The problem was that only four overseas players can play in any single match, and Dhaka’s local core underperformed badly. Their leading run scorer managed 169 runs across the whole season, which is a low number for a top-order group with this much experience.
Squad depth also carries a human side that gets forgotten. Dhaka’s fast-bowling coach Mahbub Ali Zaki died of a heart attack at 59 before one of their matches, during the team’s pre-match routine.
How many matches did they play?
Dhaka played 10 matches in BPL 2026, all of them in the league stage. They finished fifth of six and did not qualify for the playoffs.
Every side plays 10 league games in the current six-team format, facing each rival home and away. The top four go through, so Dhaka missed the cut by one place.

Three specialist wicketkeepers in one squad is unusual. Mithun kept for most of the season and finished with seven dismissals, which suggests the other two were picked as batters first.
Captain: Mohammad Mithun
Mithun took the gloves and the armband in BPL 2026. He also finished as the team’s leading run scorer with 169 runs, which says more about Dhaka’s batting than about his own season.
He is an experienced domestic professional who has played across formats for Bangladesh. Calm, orthodox, and not the sort of captain who tries anything wild.
Key players
Mohammad Saifuddin, the leading wicket-taker
Mohammad Saifuddin led the bowling with 12 wickets. He bowls seam-up, bats usefully in the lower middle order, and was one of the few Dhaka players to have a season worth remembering.
Sabbir Rahman, 2,000 BPL runs
Sabbir Rahman passed 2,000 career BPL runs during the season and took six catches, the most for the team. He has now been part of the BPL since the very first edition.
Taskin Ahmed remains the marquee local name. He is Bangladesh’s most consistent fast bowler and the sort of player a franchise builds a bowling group around.
Maruf Mridha, one for the future
Maruf Mridha is the one to watch long term. A 19-year-old left-arm quick with genuine pace is rare anywhere, let alone in Bangladesh.

The Dhaka Gladiators era, 2012 and 2013
The Gladiators won the inaugural BPL in 2012, beating Barisal Burners in the final. They repeated it in 2013 against Chittagong Kings, with Shakib Al Hasan central to both campaigns.
Back-to-back titles in the first two seasons of a new league is about as strong a start as a franchise can make. It is also, so far, the peak.
The original owners were later caught up in the corruption problems that hit several early BPL franchises, and the Gladiators name disappeared when the league returned in 2015.
The Dhaka Dynamites era, 2015 to 2019
Four seasons as the Dynamites produced one title and two runner-up finishes. The 2016-17 win over Rajshahi Kings gave the Dhaka franchise its third trophy.
The next two seasons ended in final defeats. Rangpur Riders beat them in 2017-18 with Chris Gayle in extraordinary form, and Comilla Victorians beat them in 2019 after posting 199, at the time the highest score in a BPL final.
Losing two finals in a row stings. Losing them and then not reaching another for seven years stings more.
The name-change years, 2019 to 2024
Dhaka Platoon in 2019-20. Minister Group Dhaka in 2022. Dhaka Dominators in 2023. Durdanto Dhaka in 2024. Four names in five seasons, no finals.
Each rebrand came with new owners and a new squad, and none of them built anything that lasted. The 2023 season under the Dominators name was particularly poor.
The Dhaka Capitals era, 2025 onwards
Champions Sports Ltd took over for 2025 in partnership with Shakib Khan, one of the biggest film stars in Bangladesh, and Remark HB Limited. The team became Dhaka Capitals.
The first season under the new name finished sixth of seven, with Tanzid Hasan scoring 485 runs and Mustafizur Rahman taking 13 wickets under captain Thisara Perera and coach Khaled Mahmud.
The second finished fifth of six. Better position, smaller league, same outcome: no playoffs.
BPL 2026 Season Review: Fifth Again
Dhaka went into the season with Toby Radford as head coach and Mohammad Mithun leading. The overseas group looked stronger than most rivals could afford.

Look at that top-scorer figure again. 169 runs as a team-leading total across ten matches is the clearest single explanation for why Dhaka missed the playoffs.
For comparison, Sylhet Titans opener Parvez Hossain Emon made 395 runs and Rajshahi captain Najmul Hossain Shanto made 355. Dhaka’s best was less than half of that.
The batting problem
The two collapses that ended their season
Dhaka were bowled out for 131 in one match against Rajshahi Warriors, and lost by seven wickets inside 17 overs. Ripon Mondol took a hat-trick in that game.
They also lost by 10 wickets to Chattogram Royals after being dismissed for 122, with Chattogram knocking off the runs in 12.4 overs without losing anyone. Sylhet Titans beat them twice, and bottom side Noakhali Express beat them by 41 runs.
Collapses like that destroy net run rate as well as confidence. In a ten-match season there is very little time to repair the damage.
What went right
The wins, and the loss that was not about cricket
There were wins, three of them. The clearest was against Noakhali Express, where Dhaka bowled them out for 133 for 6 and chased it down for the loss of three wickets with almost six overs unused.
Saifuddin’s 12 wickets were honest work in a struggling side. Sabbir Rahman’s 2,000th BPL run was a nice landmark for one of the league’s longest-serving players.
The season also had a genuinely sad moment when fast-bowling coach Mahbub Ali Zaki collapsed and died before a match. The team played on, but it clearly affected the group.

Dhaka finish with three matches at their home ground, which has rescued their season before. Every date above is expected rather than confirmed.
Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium: The Home of Dhaka Cricket
Mirpur is home for Dhaka Capitals and it is the most important cricket ground in Bangladesh. Capacity sits around 25,000, and every recent BPL final has been played here, including the 2026 final on 23 January.
The pitch is the trickiest in the country. It grips, it turns, and it slows noticeably as a match goes on, so chasing sides often find the ball stopping on them under lights.
Spinners run this ground. Sides that pick an extra slow bowler instead of an extra seamer usually get rewarded, and 150 is often a defendable score even though it looks small.
That should suit Dhaka. They carry Taijul Islam, Imad Wasim, Nasir Hossain and Tofael Ahmed, which is more spin than most BPL squads bother with.
Getting to Mirpur on a match evening is a test of patience. If the game starts at 6:30 PM and you leave home at 5:30 PM, you will hear the powerplay on the radio somewhere in traffic.

What to Expect from Dhaka Capitals in BPL 2027
The batting has to change. A team whose top scorer makes 169 runs in ten matches does not need a tweak, it needs a different top order.
Saif Hassan and Shamim Hossain are the local batters with the highest ceilings, and both have played international cricket. Getting one of them to 350 runs would change Dhaka’s season on its own.
The bowling is closer to right. Taskin, Saifuddin and Maruf Mridha give a decent seam group, and the spin options are already there.
Ownership looks more stable here than at most BPL clubs, which counts for something. Champions Sports Ltd has now completed two seasons, and the Shakib Khan connection brings attention that smaller franchises cannot buy.
Three titles still sits in the record book. Nobody at Dhaka wants the next line under it to read a seventh season without a final.

Dhaka Capitals carry three BPL titles, the second-best record in the league, and none of them arrived after 2017. That gap is now longer than the winning run that created it.
BPL 2026 followed the recent pattern: strong overseas names, weak local runs, fifth place, no playoffs. Mohammad Saifuddin’s 12 wickets and Sabbir Rahman’s 2,000th BPL run were about the only things worth keeping.
Stable ownership is finally in place, which is more than most BPL franchises can say. The batting is the fix, and it needs to happen at the next draft rather than in the middle of the season.
