Rangpur Riders: BPL Squad, Schedule, Players List, History & Results

In 2025 the Rangpur Riders won their first eight matches in a row and looked unbeatable. Then they lost their last four, then lost the Eliminator by nine wickets. In 2026 they finished third in the table and lost the Eliminator again. At this point the Eliminator should probably be renamed in their honour.

How Many Players Are in the Rangpur Riders Squad?

Rangpur named 24 players for BPL 2026: 16 Bangladeshi cricketers and 8 overseas signings. It was one of the most experienced groups in the tournament.

The local list alone reads like a Bangladesh team sheet. Litton Das, Mustafizur Rahman, Towhid Hridoy, Nahid Rana, Mahmudullah and Nurul Hasan have all played plenty of international cricket.

The overseas group leaned towards proven T20 professionals rather than superstars. Dawid Malan, Kyle Mayers, Iftikhar Ahmed, Faheem Ashraf and Khushdil Shah have hundreds of franchise matches between them.

Two of their signings, Emilio Gay and Wayne Madsen, played as Italy-qualified cricketers. That is a fairly modern piece of squad building and not something you often see in the BPL.

How many matches did they play?

Rangpur played 11 matches in BPL 2026: ten league games and the Eliminator.

They finished third on the league table with 6 wins and 4 losses, level on 12 points with Chattogram Royals but behind on net run rate. That single decimal point pushed them into the Eliminator instead of Qualifier 1.

Then Sylhet Titans beat them by three wickets in the Eliminator, and their season ended in fourth place. Our BPL Schedule 2026-27 page explains why third versus second matters so much.

Six Pakistani players in one squad is unusual even by BPL standards. Mickey Arthur coached Pakistan for years, so the connection is not hard to work out.

Captain: Nurul Hasan Sohan

Sohan kept wicket and led the side, finishing with 12 dismissals, the most for Rangpur. Litton Das also took the armband during the season.

Sohan is an aggressive, vocal captain who sets attacking fields and is happy to argue with anyone. Some seasons that works brilliantly, some seasons it does not.

Key players

Towhid Hridoy, the run engine

Hridoy topped the team’s batting with 382 runs, second only to Sylhet’s Parvez Hossain Emon across the whole tournament. He bats at three or four and plays spin better than most Bangladeshi batters his age.

At 25 he is entering his prime years. If Rangpur keep one local player for 2027, it should be him.

Mustafizur Rahman, 400 T20 wickets

The Fizz led Rangpur’s bowling with 16 wickets and reached 400 career T20 wickets during the season. His slower ball is still one of the hardest deliveries to pick in world cricket.

He is also the reason Rangpur rarely lost a close finish. Handing him the 19th or 20th over changes what a batting side thinks is possible.

Mrittunjoy Chowdhury, the double hat-trick man

Mrittunjoy took a hat-trick against Noakhali Express, the tenth in BPL history and the second of the season. It was also his second BPL hat-trick, making him the first player ever to take multiple hat-tricks in the competition.

Litton Das took 10 catches, the most for the team. Nahid Rana, still only 23, gives Rangpur genuine express pace, which almost nobody else in the BPL has.

Rangpur Riders History: Season 1 to Season 12

Rangpur joined the BPL in its second season and have played ten of the twelve editions. Unlike most BPL franchises they have kept broadly the same name throughout, which by local standards is close to miraculous.

Ten seasons, one title, and a lot of near misses. They have made the playoffs plenty of times without reaching a second final.

The early years, 2013 to 2017

Rangpur entered in the second BPL season and spent four editions as a competitive but forgettable side. They were usually around mid-table without threatening the top two.

The franchise did keep its identity through those seasons, which put it ahead of teams that were rebranding every year.

The title year, 2017-18

This is the season Rangpur fans still talk about. Mashrafe Mortaza captained, Tom Moody coached, and Chris Gayle scored 485 runs, including one of the great BPL final innings.

Rangpur beat Dhaka Dynamites in the final at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. Gayle also set the record for the fastest fifty in BPL history, made in 12 balls during that same season.

Mashrafe took 15 wickets and led with the calm that made him a national figure. It remains the only BPL trophy in the Rangpur cabinet.

Rangers, absence and return, 2019 to 2024

The team played 2019-20 as Rangpur Rangers, then vanished for the 2022 season when the BPL ran with six teams and no Rangpur side.

They returned in 2023 under the Rangpur Riders name with Bashundhara Group as owners, and played 2023, 2024 and 2025 without reaching a final.

The 2025 collapse

BPL 2025 deserves its own paragraph because it is one of the strangest runs in BPL history. Rangpur won all eight of their opening league matches and looked certain to top the table.

Then they lost their final four league games, dropped to third, and lost the Eliminator to Khulna Tigers by nine wickets. Twelve matches, eight wins, and nothing to show for it.

Saif Hassan scored 306 runs and Akif Javed took 20 wickets in that campaign. Mickey Arthur was in charge then too.

BPL 2026 Season Review: Third, Then Out

Toggi Sports took over the franchise for the 2025-26 season, replacing Bashundhara Group. Mickey Arthur stayed on as head coach with Mohammad Ashraful assisting and Mohammad Rafique on spin.

Rangpur and Chattogram Royals both finished on 12 points. Chattogram’s net run rate of 0.497 beat Rangpur’s 0.220, and that gap decided who went into Qualifier 1 and who went into the Eliminator.

Chattogram then reached the final. Rangpur went out in one match. Net run rate is not a footnote in this league.

Matches worth remembering

Rangpur chased down 145 against Sylhet Titans with 18.5 overs used and six wickets in hand, the match in which Mustafizur reached 400 T20 career wickets.

They also beat Noakhali Express by 8 wickets in a run chase, knocking off 174 in 19.4 overs for the loss of two. That is the sort of clinical chasing that made them look like contenders.

The one that hurt was against Rajshahi Warriors, a tied game that went to a Super Over. Rangpur managed only 6 for 2 in their over and Rajshahi knocked off the target without losing a wicket.

Noakhali Express, who finished bottom with two wins all season, took one of them off Rangpur by 9 runs. That result probably cost them the net run rate they needed.

The Eliminator

Rangpur batted first and managed only 111 for 9 against Sylhet Titans. Sylhet chased it with three wickets standing, and Rangpur’s season was over in one afternoon.

Second Eliminator exit in two years. There is a pattern here and Rangpur need to break it.

Their projected final league match on 8 February could easily decide a playoff place. Rangpur have a habit of ending up in exactly that kind of fixture.

Rangpur Stadium: The Home Ground

Rangpur Riders are officially based at Rangpur Stadium in Rangpur city, a ground with a long history in Bangladeshi domestic cricket.

The catch is the same one Rajshahi face. The BPL has not used Rangpur as a host city in recent seasons, so the Riders play no actual home matches there during the tournament.

BPL 2026 ran across Sylhet, Chattogram and Dhaka only. Fans in the north either travel several hours or watch on television, which is a long-standing frustration in a division that produces plenty of cricketers.

Widening the venue list has been discussed. Nothing is confirmed for 2027, so for now Rangpur remain a franchise named after a city the tournament does not visit.

Guides to the grounds that do host BPL cricket are on our BPL Venues page.

What to Expect from Rangpur Riders in BPL 2027

The squad is not the issue. A team with Mustafizur, Nahid Rana, Litton Das, Towhid Hridoy and Mahmudullah should be reaching finals, not exiting in Eliminators.

The issue is closing out seasons. In 2025 they won eight in a row then lost five straight including the Eliminator. In 2026 they finished third and lost the one knockout game they got.

Net run rate is the specific thing to fix. Two seasons in a row Rangpur have been level or close on points and been pushed down by a decimal, and it has cost them a route to the final both times.

Mickey Arthur has now had multiple seasons with this group. If the pattern repeats a third time, the conversation will move from bad luck to something else.

Retentions, draft picks and squad news go on this page and on our BPL Squads hub as soon as they are confirmed.

Final Words

Rangpur Riders finished fourth in BPL 2026 with a squad that looked good enough for a final. Towhid Hridoy scored 382 runs, Mustafizur Rahman reached 400 T20 career wickets, and Mrittunjoy Chowdhury became the first man to take two BPL hat-tricks.

None of it mattered once they lost the Eliminator for the second year running. A decimal point of net run rate put them there instead of Qualifier 1.

One title from ten seasons, and it came in 2018. Rangpur have the players to fix that. What they have not managed is finishing a season the way they start it.
